The irony is not lost on me

how when I was wandering

all those years in the darkness,

I felt nothing

[my armored skin impenetrable

as I bulldozed my way through life]

And how today,

as I live in the light,

I feel everything

from everyone

[every goddamn thing

and there’s no escaping it]

If God wants me to be happy

then why did He make it

so that I bear

perpetual heartbreak

This is why a smile

to a stranger

is so important

— like a signal fire in the night
